BlackBerrys For Everyone! PDF Print E-mail

Finally, I got rid of my Palm and picked up a BlackBerry. A BlackBerry Storm to be exact. I have been a Palm user for years and have been accustomed to the luxury of a touch screen display before they became very popular in todays smartphone designs. I originally wanted to go with a BlackBerry Bold, however I just couldn't imagine myself not having a touch screen display.

So far so good but there are minor things that could improve my over all experience with my new BlackBerry.

First and foremost is Linux support! Unfortunately Research In Motion Ltd. only has drivers and software released for Windows and Mac users. I don't understand why they wouldn't release drivers for the Linux community?

Good thing for a project called Barry. "Barry is a GPL C++ library for interfacing with the RIM BlackBerry Handheld. It comes with a command line tool for exploring the device and a GUI for making quick backups. This project's goal is to create a fully functional syncing mechanism on Linux."

If you are not comfortable or simply can't use CLI(command line interface), I don't recommend these early version of Barry Cool

One thing that bugs me is that I can not make folders within folders! Some default contents installed onto the device cannot be removed as well. The BlackBerry OS simply just doesn't have enough options to my liking. I wish they would release an open source version of their OS for more advance tech users, such as myself. All in all, I would go with a BlackBerry over Palm OS or Windows Mobile any day now that I have experienced the BlackBerry for myself.

As Index Nightclub Inc. grows. BlackBerrys will be the main device for mobile communication. All office staff will be equipped with BlackBerrys and I can't wait to deploy a BlackBerry Enterprise Server and really start utilizing the full potential of a BlackBerry device.
